Information we handle
Account and contact information: details you provide, such as your name, email address, phone number, business information, preferences, and support requests. We also handle sign-in and account-verification records.
Conversations and content: messages to Sam, uploaded photos or videos, listing details, and the drafts or responses created from them. Only upload information you have the right to share. Photos and videos may contain location information, identifying labels, and other personal details.
Connected marketplace information: when you authorize a supported connection, we handle the access information needed for it and the account activity available through that connection. This may include watched items, bids, offers, purchases, invoices, pickup details, listing locations, and history. Coverage depends on the marketplace and the permissions you provide.
Service and device information: sign-in sessions, IP addresses, browser or device information, interactions with the service, error records, and security logs. Cookies or similar storage keep you signed in and remember preferences. Third-party features, such as map tiles, may receive your IP address and the map area requested.
Where profile research is offered, we may use public or business-directory sources to suggest account information. A suggested match is not proof of your identity. Contact us to correct inaccurate information.
How we use information
We use information to operate your account, provide the features you request, organize marketplace activity, prepare listing drafts, respond to questions, and deliver communications you choose. We also use it to maintain service reliability, investigate abuse, protect accounts, resolve disputes, and meet applicable legal obligations.
Features described here may be unavailable during a preview or rollout. Describing a data category does not mean we collect it from every user or that a marketplace connection is supported.
Your phone number and text consent
We do not sell, rent, or share mobile numbers or SMS opt-in information with third parties or affiliates for their marketing or promotional purposes. Text-message consent is specific to Surplus and is not transferred to other senders. Providers that support delivery may process this information only as needed to operate the messaging program.
We handle your phone number, message content, delivery records, and records of consent and withdrawal to deliver requested texts and honor your choices. Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to unsubscribe or HELP for help. Optional text consent is not a condition of purchase.
Storage and retention
We use access controls and safeguards designed to protect account information. No service or transmission method can guarantee absolute security. Keep passwords and verification codes out of ordinary chat and SMS.
We retain information for as long as reasonably needed to provide requested services, maintain security and consent records, comply with legal obligations, and resolve disputes. Disconnecting a marketplace stops future authorized access through that connection; it does not by itself erase previously stored history. Account-deletion requests are handled separately, and some records may need to be retained for these purposes. Backup copies may remain until their normal removal cycle.
Your choices and requests
You can update available account settings, disconnect marketplace accounts, and opt out of texts. To request access, a correction, a copy of your information, or account deletion, contact support@surplus.com. We may verify your identity before acting on a request. Additional rights may apply depending on where you live; we will handle requests under applicable law.
The service is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us so we can investigate and take appropriate action.
Surplus is based in the United States. Service providers may process information in other countries, where privacy protections can differ. We will update this page when this policy changes and provide additional notice or seek consent when required.
